Making Homemade Wine

Have you ever thought about making homemade wine? Do you enjoy wine with your meals at your favorite restaurants? How about the local wine tasting events? If so, here is some information on making wine at home.

Your home may not be a world famous winery, but the grapes will never know. People have been making wine in their basements for years, and all the wine making information on the Internet has made it even easier. Some people do it as a hobby and others do it to try to create a perfect wine for their taste. You can either buy a wine making kit locally or online or with a wine making recipe and a few simple supplies and room to store the wine during fermentation you can make it at home.

If this is your first time making wine you should keep it simple and use a simple recipe. A simple apple wine is a good project for a beginner. The ingredients needed are: five gallons of apple juice, 5 pounds of sugar, 2 tbls yeast nutrient and 1/2 tsp of pectin enzyme. You will also need 2 1/2 tbls of an acid blend, 1 tsp of wine tannin and one package of fresh live yeast and a bottle of campden tablets. Once you have gathered everything on your recipe list it's time to make the wine.

The first step is to mix everything together except for the yeast. You will need to add water in a 1:1 ratio with the amount of apple juice. In this example that would be 5 gallons of water and 5 gallons of apple juice. Crush 5 of the campden tablets to a fine powder and add it to the mixture. The next step is to cover the container with a thin cloth and allow the wine to ferment for 24 hours.

The next step of making homemade wine is to remove the cloth cover and add the yeast package. Just tear open the package and sprinkle the yeast evenly on the top of the wine and recover with the cloth. After 6 or 7 days transfer the wine to a new bucket or other container and pour carefully to leave the grape sediment behind.

The air lock will be added in the next step. After the air lock is added you will need to fill it with water about half way and let the wine sit for four to six weeks. After the wine has cleared you need to remove any sediment still remaining from the process and crush and add 5 more campden tablets.

The final, and most fulfilling, step is to bottle your new wine. You should also use your computer and printer to make some neat labels for your new homemade wine.

This is very basic information on making homemade wine. You should continue your education about making wine by getting a book from your local library or bookstore.
